Aren't fraternities just like the ones shown on TV?

Nobody likes stereotypes. Unfortunately, popular TV shows and movies have categorized fraternity members as partiers, irresponsible, and abusive. In real life, fraternities are values-based organizaaqtions dedicated to th development of character and lifelong friendship. Fraternities encourage their members to strive for academic achievement, to respect the dignity of all persons and demonstrate responsibility.

Doesn't it cost a lot of money to be in a fraternity?

Each fraternity is self-supported through dues charged to all members. In the first year of membership, many fraternities have few one time expenses that are assessed. After those initial payments are made, your student's only expenses should be his regular dues. A variety of payment plans are usually offered, but these vary from fraternity to fraternity.

What is alcohol use really like in the fraternity?
|
Alcohol abuse is unhealthy and inconsistent with fraternity ideals. All fraternities are expected to uphold state, county and town laws; as well as university policies regarding the consumption of alcohol. In addition, the fraternities are not allowed to purchase alcohol for members. Fraternity leaders and university administration have very clear rules regarding alcohol use.
The days of large quantities of alcohol at social functions are gone. Instead, you'll find fraternity members participating in alcohol free social events such as dinner exchanges and lip-sync contests. Students who choose not to drink will know that it's okay and will feel comfortable with their decision.

My student is attending college to earn a degree - what impact will fraternity membership have on my student's academics?

Students often find managing their time difficult when moving from highly structured high school environment to the freedom of college. Fraternities assist in the transition by offering scholarship programs which might include study partners, test taking skill development, and time management workshops. Your student can access the network of fraternity members who already know how to use campus resources like the library, academic and carrer conseling center, computer labs, and academic advisors.

What about pledging or hazing?
|
All fraternities oppose hazing and are committed to a membership education period which instills a sense of responsibility and commitment in new members.
New fraternity members all experience a period of orientation. During this time your student and the other new members will participate in weekly meetings to learn about the university and the fraternity, as well as attend leadership retreats, community service projects, and activities designed to build friendships among the members. This period is designed to assist your student in overcoming some of his concerns about success during college.

Who is actually in charge of the fraternity?
|
Fraternity members elected to officer positions manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. These officers are assisted by members serving on committees and by alumni who serve as advisors.
In addition, fraternities are part of a national organization which offers support, advice, and direction through a paid professional staff and regional volunteers. Professional staff from the university are also emplowed to assist and monitor the activities of the fraternities.

What is my role as a family member?

Be supportive and learn as much as you can by asking questions of your son as he meets people through the recruitment process. Before, during, or after he decides to join an organization ask more questions (how much are dues and what does tha tmoney pay for?, what are the requirements for initiation?, etc.) Fraternity members will be more than happy to tell him and you about their group. Become involve and participate in family related events.
